Alleged Mistress Was Vampire
By Jonathan Kingsman, Sun-Times Staff Writer

JOLIET -- The woman with whom the late Sen. George Roberson was accused to having an affair has been identified on Wednesday as a vampire, according to an anonymous source within Roberson's office.

Roberson, a three-term Democrat from Springfield, was found dead in a Joliet motel room on June 26. The police report told of two tiny holes in the right side of Roberson's neck, and a puddle of what coroners discovered was his own blood on the carpet beneath him.

"Sen. Roberson was clearly the victim of a vampire feeding," the report read in part. "Cook County Coroner is suggesting Roberson's body be incinerated to prevent potential rising."

Roberson's death came two weeks after he drafted a piece of legislation through Congress that would've added over $350 billion of funding to the supernatural divisions of both the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Central Intelligence Agency. The Department of Homeland Security and the White House both supported the measure, though the Senate was bitterly divided on the matter.

Rumors surrounding an affair between Roberson and Chicago native Veronica Darden only complicated the Senator's public efforts to gain support for his bill.

Police received a 911 call around midnight on Wednesday, saying a woman matching Darden's description was in a back alley south of the Loop, feeding on a drunken bar patron. Though the victim has yet to be identified, the officer on the scene, Lt. Robert Castleberry, caught a glimpse of Darden as she ran away from his squad car.

"That was her, alright," he said. "I know what that monster looks like."

Though no one has officially linked Roberson with Darden, he has been accused of infidelity off and on through his entire tenure in Washington. Janet Roberson, the Senator's wife of 23 years, could not be reached for comment.

Roberson admitted in an interview on June 13 that he knew Darden, claiming he'd offered her an internship in his Chicago office after she graduated from University of Illinois-Chicago. Roberson's office did not have any record of Darden's employment, however, and one anonymous staffer said they had only seen Darden when she would show up in the evening wearing "the most form-fitting and revealing dresses."

Roberson was accused of adultery during his initial Senate campaign in 1998, when a teenager came forth claiming to be pregnant with his child. A WGN investigative report, however, found the teenager, who went by "Wendy" even though her true identity was never revealed, to be a part of the opposition's campaign in an attempt to sully Roberson's character.

The anonymous source confirmed Roberson was in Joliet on the night of June 26, and the Sun-Times obtained a copy of the bill for his room. The motel has not yet been paid for Roberson's stay that night, but manager Roscoe Underwood said he wasn't concerned.

"I'll get my money one way or another," he said. "I just can't believe I let a damn bloodsucker in my motel. Think I might need to get someone to cast me one of those invitation spells or something."
